As part of our "Self" theme, we have been talking about the ways we are the same and different. Here are two graphs that show some of the similarities and differences in our class. In addition to promoting tolerance, these conversations are rich in math facts. We talk about which column has the most or least, we use our hands to make "math hands" to show the number, and we do simple addition and subtration to find out how many more or less. The kids have loved our conversations.

Paper bag Puppets
The children were instructed to make a paper bag puppet of a member of their family. Some chose to make themselves. Others chose to create parents or siblings. They are all fantastic.

Self Portraits and Hopes and Dream
The children chose a piece of construction paper they thought matched their skin tone and drew a self portrait. I added a picture of them creating the self portrait and the hopes and dreams you sent back. If you need another pink heart to add your hopes and dreams, please let me know.

Mat Man
We use Mat Man from Handwriting Without Tears as a way to teach the parts of the body for self portraits. Your children helped to build Mat Man yesterday and will again tomorrow. Here is a link to the song that goes with the activity, some cards you can print and use if you'd like to do this at home, and a picture of what Mat Man looks like. We did not watch the video. We listened to the song while the kids built Mat Man.
