The Busy Tree Dramatic Play Area

October Song Lyrics

October Song Lyrics

Parts of a Tree (sung to Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes)
Roots, trunk, branches, leaves
Branches, leaves
Roots, trunk, branches, leaves
Branches, leaves
Buds and fruits and flowers in the breeze
Those are the parts of a tree

A tree my size
This tree is wide
This tree is tall
This tree is thin
This tree is small
Beautiful trees
I see with my eyes
But the one I like the best
Is exactly my size!

Five Little Squirrels
Five little squirrels sitting by the door
One ran away and then there were four
Four little squirrels climbing up a tree
One ran away and  that left three
Three little squirrels with a coat so new
One ran away and then there were two
Two little squirrels sitting in the sun
One ran away and that left only one
One little squirrel sleeping on his pillow
It woke up and ran away and then there were zero

Fall Is Here
Leaves are falling,
Leaves are falling,
To the ground,
Without a sound,
Days are getting shorter,
Nights are getting longer,
Fall is here,
Fall is here.

I am a squirrel Action Rhyme
I am a squirrel in a tall, tall tree.
Stretch up tall toward the sky!
I like to look around and see, see, see!
Make hands into binocular shapes and look around!
I am picking acorns for my lunch,
"Pick" invisible acorns out of the air.
I love the way they crunch, crunch, crunch!
Make exagerrated crunches with your mouth.
Sometimes I stretch my arms up to the sky,
Spread arms out wide.
Take a leap, and start to fly!

Jump and "fly" around the room!

October Newsletter

Hi Families,

We are studying trees for the month of October. We spent the first two weeks
talking about the parts of a tree and the life cycle of a tree. Vocabulary words
we use are seeds, sprout, roots, trunk, bark, branches, leaves, chlorophyll,
deciduous and coniferous. The children have enjoyed studying the different
tree items in our science area. We have painted using pine cones, leaves, and
acorns, drawn and painted a still life of the tree in our room, and done a large bark
rubbing to create the trunk of a tree for our bulletin board. The next two weeks we
will be talking about who lives in trees and how a tree contributes to the well being
of animals by providing food, shelter, and camouflage. One of the books we will be
reading is The Busy Tree by Jennifer Ward. Our second  house area will be converted
into a hollow tree with woodland animals and birds. The children will be encouraged
to act out the story using the props. The last week of October, we will read Chicka,
Chicka, Boom, Boom by Bill Martin Jr. and John Archambault. We will do many
activities with letter identification, letter sounds, and the children’s names.

Your children are doing an amazing job at preschool! They have quickly learned the
routines and expectations of our day, are practicing the “flip trick” to independently put
on their jacket, made new friends, and many can pack their backpacks with minimal help.
Thank you for sharing them with us each afternoon. Ms. Linda and I thoroughly enjoy our
time with them.

Life Cycle of a Tree

We have been talking about the parts of a tree and the life cycle of a tree. Vocabulary we are using includes: seeds, sprout, roots, trunk, bark, branches, leaves, fruit, chlorophyll, deciduous trees, and coniferous trees. This is the life cycle of a deciduous tree. The word deciduous means "fall off" which is what the leaves do in autumn.

The Nathan Tree Still Life

The children did black line drawings of the tree in our classroom. Then, they painted their drawings using green and brown water colors.

Our Study of Trees in the Science Area

Thank you for all of your contributions to our science area. The children are scientists as they use microscopes and magnifying glasses to study the different tree materials that were brought in. They document their findings in drawings.
